Are Gallery Walls Losing Their Appeal?

Mark & Diana Massey

Gallery walls have long been a way to turn blank walls into personalized displays of photos, art, and keepsakes. But as design trends shift, some are questioning whether gallery walls still hold the same charm—or if it’s time to explore new ways to bring visual interest to interior spaces.

What Is a Gallery Wall?

A gallery wall is a thoughtfully arranged collection of artwork, objects, or decorative pieces displayed together on a single wall, similar to what you may find in an art gallery. Many designs go beyond framed art to incorporate shelves, mirrors, plants, woven baskets, and other textured elements. A common denominator, be it framing, subject matter, or finish, unifies details to create cohesion.

This interior design practice, formerly known as salon walls, dates back centuries. In 17th-century France, framed pieces were hung from floor to ceiling, filling rooms with collections that showcased wealth and taste. Today, the idea remains the same: to tell a story of what you love and the memories you’ve made.

Are Gallery Walls Out of Style?

Gallery walls aren’t expected to ever truly go out of style. Their appeal lies in the opportunity to tell a story through art, create a focal point within a living space, ground an oversized room, and add visual interest—all without using floor space. Getting the scale, items, and layout right is essential.

Nowadays, hanging family photos and school portraits, especially along the stairway, can read as dated. Hanging curated, meaningful pieces together continues to feel timeless.

When to Skip the Gallery Wall

Not every space is suitable for a gallery wall. Narrow hallways and small powder rooms, and dimly lit areas make it difficult to view a collection all at once, diminishing the overall effect. The wall needs to be blank, free of other clutter and decor like bookcases or other display areas, to let the gallery stand out.

How to Style Walls Without Creating a Gallery

For those without a collection or the confidence to set up a curated, cohesive gallery, decorating a large empty wall can feel daunting. These stylish alternatives still add interest and balance to a space.

  1. Go Big: One single piece of artwork can make a bold statement while maintaining a streamlined look. As a general rule of thumb, the piece should take up about 60% of the blank wall.
  2. Display a Set: Choose pieces that can be displayed as a series or set. A triptych, which is one continuous image divided into three equal vertical segments, is a great example.
  3. Incorporate Furniture: Break up a large wall by placing an armchair, cabinet, or console table against it. Taller pieces, such as an etagere or bookcase, can have artwork hung on both sides.
  4. Bring the Outside In: Houseplants and potted trees bring a natural beauty. You can use a pedestal table or hanging planter to place plants at different heights.
  5. Add Mirrors: A large mirror can be a great addition to a small, dim room. When placed near a window, it brings in light and makes the space feel brighter and more spacious.
